Deep Springs is Now a Coeducational College. We Accept Applications from Women and Men, and from Eligible Students Regardless of Gender Identity.
Students enter Deep Springs in early July. The application process for each class begins the previous fall. Students who apply in the fall of 2019 will, if accepted, matriculate at Deep Springs in July of 2020.
Online Application for admission to the 2020-2021 academic year will be available in early September, 2019
The first round of the application for the 2019-2020 year is due on November 6, 2019. In the initial round, we ask for several essays, a description of your non-academic interests and activities, standardized test scores, demographic information, and official academic transcripts from any secondary schools, colleges, and universities you have attended (the Deep Springs CEEB/SAT/AP/TOEFL code is 4281; the ACT code is 0252).
Before you apply, please read the President’s Letter to Potential Applicants
Why are the essay questions on the application so weird?
It is all too easy to fall into traditional modes of self-presentation when applying to colleges. But since Deep Springs is unusual, it is hard to tell from “usual” essays how well a student might fare here. This means our essay questions should bring you to a stop for an hour or two.
Please don’t be discouraged if you’re not sure at first what to say. We have tried to ask questions about things you haven’t already studied, and to craft questions that cannot be answered without taking some time to think about them first. We hope that our applicants will enjoy this opportunity.
When will I hear back?
In mid-December, you will be notified whether or not you are invited to complete the second round of the application. The second-round application consists of several additional essays, updated transcripts and scores, letters of recommendation, and an interview with the Applications Committee (ApCom). Candidates chosen for the second round are encouraged to visit the college for several days in the winter, in order to interview in person and learn first-hand about what it is like to be a student at Deep Springs. If you qualify, aid is available for travel within the United States for your second-round visit; contact the Dean once you have been admitted to the second round for more information about travel aid. While on-campus interviews are preferred, phone interviews are also available.
