Academic Facilities

Deep Springs has generous resources to support our liberal arts curriculum. Thanks to our small size, students receive unparalleled access to the science lab, the museum and archives, music and art studios, and library.

Science Lab

The science lab, housed inside the Museum building, is well equipped for the study of chemistry and biology. Ample equipment is available to study natural history in the field. Additionally, the lab contains a geology collection, an impressive herbarium, and a number of animal specimens. Deep Springs Valley itself is an impressive outdoor geology lab, serving as a regular study destination for other universities as well as Deep Springs students.

Museum and Archives

Together, the Museum and Archives provide historical documents, photographs, and artifacts related to both Deep Springs and the surrounding region. Many articles date back to 1917 or earlier. Using the Archives as a primary source, students often research academic projects about the history of Deep Springs or the local area.

Music and Art Studios

Students interested in fine art make use of our painting studio and photographic dark room. A kiln is available for ceramics classes. The Dick Dawson Music Room boasts an eclectic number of instruments for student and community use. The most frequently played instrument is a 1917 Steinway grand piano in the Main Building.

Library

The David Mossner DS63 Memorial Library is home to numerous study spaces and over 30,000 volumes. A portion of the titles in the collection have been present since the library was established in 1917; through book donations and acquisitions over the years, the library has been continually updated since then. Inter Library Loan services are available to source titles not already in our possession. The library is home to several special collections, including the personal libraries of Deep Springs founder L.L. Nunn and influential political theorist Sheldon Wolin. A staff librarian works with students to curate and maintain the library.

Library Donation Policies

The expansiveness and diversity of our collection would not be possible without the generosity of donors. If you have books that you would like to donate to the Mossner Library please contact the staff and student librarians. Deep Springs only accepts books that are in good condition and fit our subject needs. Because our space is limited, we will refuse books that are in poor condition or are irrelevant to our educational goals.
